Benedictine. Four fairy tales: Le Petit Chaperon Rouge; Cendrillon; Barbe Bleue; Le Chat Botte. n.p. n.d [Benedictine 190-?]. Four volumes octavo colour illustrated wrappers; each fourteen pages with six or seven colour illustrations. Each is numbered to have eight leaves but has seven - ie the last leaf does not have a conjugate at the front - but they are apparently complete. One with a tiny nibble of one corner, a few other signs of use, pretty good. Au$150

A set of advertising fairy tales properly fashioned to reflect how essential Benedictine is in the way of all things. If Cinderella's fairy godmother hadn't given her those two tiny bottles in case the feast was too rich we would never have a happy ending. Perfect lessons for every child.

The wine merchants of wine merchants, Nicolas, produced these catalogues of their great wines annually from 1927 to 1973. 1932 is neo-fauve bacchanalian with Legrand at his splodgiest.

A neat little catalogue of photo and other albums in a varitey of styles, available in different sizes. Japan was by the thirties camera crazy as well having a large population of avid ephemera collectors. A good time to be in the album business.

Catalogue - spectacles etc. Societe des Lunetiers, Paris. Societe des Lunetiers. The company [192-?]. Cloth screw binder 28x20cm; 350pp, illustrated throughout. A nice copy. Au$325

An exemplary catalogue of everything for improved vision and those in the trade. Spectacles, goggles, lens of all kinds, and all the bits and pieces for ophthalmologists and optomerists. The Societe was a conglomerate that began as co-operative in the mid 19th century and set out to conquer the optical world. They are still doing so under some forgettable name. There is no mention here of their radical new Stigmal lens which dates this before 1927.

Wine labels. Album of specimen wine labels titled on the cover: 'Album G - Enveloppes Sachets Etiquettes-Dennison' with the initials G.M.C. under a coat of arms. n.p. [190-?]. Folio cloth backed silk paper boards, 36x25cm, album titled in silver and black (covers shabby but strong); some 180 chromolitho and colour printed labels mounted on card leaves, 26 pages including the inside covers. Used and rightly so. Au$475

This album was not, or at least this copy was not, sent to customers. This is a working shop album. Specimens have been crammed in, some have been removed and others pasted over. The labels have serial numbers but no particular order, a few European languages are used and wines from France to Greece are included. Most are generic and many unlettered. There are, as well, a few labels for things like oils and soaps. G.M.C. remains undeciphered by me. Though titled in French my guess is that G.M.C. are Belgian printers, this is aimed more at German wine makers or merchants than anyone else and that the name is some variation of Moor: Mohr, Moer, etc. A pleasing gathering of florid fin de siecle commercial art with some smart nouveau and jugendstijl design and the never stale sumptuous gold on glazed midnight blue.

Tobacco. Three price and retailers lists of cigars, cigarettes and tobacco and a manual of rules and regulations from the Imperial Japanese Government Monopoly. [Tokyo?] 1908-1911. Four items, varying octavos, publisher's printed wrappers; ranging from 20 to 72 pages, errata slips. Minor signs of use, pretty good. In English and Japanese but for the regulations (1910) which is in Japanese. Au$100

A neat little precis of the tobacco market in the early 20th century, domestic and imported, at a time when decent cigarettes most likely came from Egypt, often with a gold tip. In 1904 the government nationalised all tobacco products in Japan, pushed by outrage at the multi-million dollar purchase of Japanese tobacco interests by the newly formed British-American Tobacco Company. The English sections of the lists are for foreigners in Japan.

Curious that Maroubra was a better selling point than Coogee. More Colonna Point land was advertised soon after WWI but Colonna Point Estate, presumably related to the late resident Richard Colonna-Close, didn't stick as a name; seems 'Colonna Point' disappeared as soon as the land was sold.

The fairly deluxe prospectus for the commercial art school. Throughout are examples of the work - posters, advertisements etc - of successful students, the staff, and distinguished contributors, including James Northfield, Ted Scoresby and Ida Outhwaite. There are a few versions of this book with slightly different titles and contents. This one does not match any of the three noted by Trove. Neither does it quite match a copy that came through here a few years ago with some correspondence dated 1937.

Superhero comic. Bulb Magic! NY, Custom Comics for the Associated Bulb Growers of Holland [1956]. 19x13cm publisher's colour illustrated wrapper; 16pp; comic strip in colour. Au$30

Forget Captain America and Superman. What did they ever do for the American suburb? We lose little time in exposition: on page one Tom and Bob meet on the homeward bound 5.04 and Bob is flummoxed to find Tom has sold his house at asking price while he, Bob, hasn't had a nibble for his, the same model. Not entirely the same, Tom explains, his bulb plantings "sure did increase the value!" So we learn how bulbs produced a colorful miracle for Tom and can do the same for us. Did Batman ever increase your property value? Worldcat finds two copies but one of those can't be verified.

Catalogue - home cinema. Pathescope, Sydney. The Pathescope General Catalogue 1931 [with] Pathescope Home Cinema Film Catalogue. [London] 1931 & Sydney [1931?]. Octavo publisher's colour illustrated wrapper (worn with some insect nibbles); 18pp & 16pp self wrapper. The English printed list has illustrations of the projector and accessories, and a three page Australian price list pasted inside the back cover. All somewhat rumpled and used, a few short tears, and completely acceptable. Au$125

The genesis of home cinema; Pathe developed their first home film projector in 1911 and by 1931 were pretty much out of the game. Kodak put paid to them with 16mm film in the mid twenties in the US and the European home film business was sold in 1929 and died altogether in 1934. The Sydney list urges customers to join the film exchange library and I suspect such libraries lingered on a while after Pathescope itself was gone. I can't find any Pathescope catalogues in Trove or OCLC, am I looking in the wrong place?

Catalogue - furniture. Industrial Arts Institute, Tokyo. '57 Works of Industrial Arts Institute. Tokyo 1958. 28x19cm publisher's embossed wrapper (a small flaw in the front cover); 36pp, photo illustrations throughout. Text in Japanese and English. Au$90

Japinavian modern in furniture, furnishings, tableware and so on; a showcase for the Institute's export ambitions. The Institute was founded in 1927 and turned out many of the country's most renowned designers in the middle third of the century. It's perhaps not curious that the Japanese became enamoured with the western styles and movements most influenced by themselves, from art nouveau through asymmetrical modernism to Scandinavian simplicity. I doubt there was a Japanese craze for Quaker design; it had no connection but still looked too much like a working class household. Whether defensive or merely instructive, the description of what looks to me like a Danish coffee table tells us that it is a tea table in the shape of a traditional Japanese boat.

There may well be cosies knitted from Madame Weigel's pattern books still in charity bins and unopened gift drawers round the country and I advise you to start looking. They won't last long - and can modern knitters wield their sticks with the same precision? Regard this as a challenge.

Catalogue - farm machinery. Weir Plow Co, Monmouth Ill. Plows, Cultivators, Harrows, Three-wheeled Riding, Tongueless, Single and Gang Plows ... etc., etc. The company [c1890]. Large octavo publisher's illustrated wrapper, 67pp, well illustrated. Unfortunately a mouse, my guess, nibbled the edge of this and stuck a few pages together which have been torn, without loss, by an over eager reader. Still a decent copy. With two update leaves dated February and December 1891 pasted in at the end as instructed. And with the date stamp - 11 Jul 1891 - on the front of agent A.G. Webster & Son of Hobart. Au$50

A particularly handsome plow catalogue, and I don't say such things lightly, with two full page minor masterpieces of midwest wood engraving. Wooden boxes of all shapes and sizes for quarter, half and full cheeses, from Camembert to Gruyere via Roquefort, Munster, Port-Salut ... ; followed by specialty boxes for postage, pharmaceuticals and so on. Fifth edition - six editions apparently appeared between 1934 and 1961 but (you won't hear me say this when I have a first edition to sell) there isn't any difference in quality or content between them. An interesting, useful sample book of ostensibly historic colours, from the Egyptians on, matched as closely as possible by the paint manufactures. It includes oriental, Etruscan, Pompeian, Moorish, Wedgwood, Aubusson, Adam Brothers and many more types and periods.

Quarto publisher's illustrated wrappers (corner gone from the top corner of the front); 16pp, illustrated throughout and with some 60 mounted fabric swatches. A pretty good copy complete with the order forms and the four page brochure on how to measure yourself. Au$90

Clifton Webb, Robert Montgomery and Edward Arnold never looked so smart and you can be sure they didn't wear Sears Roebuck suits. I'm almost sure one of the models here is a young John Wayne. One of Wayne's biographers writes of the unhappy poor boy reading Sears Roebuck catalogues cover to cover and dreaming of being able to afford everything in them. A dream shared by countless Americans, young and old, for decades.

Catalogue - hearses. Merts & Riddle, Ravenna, Ohio. Merts & Riddle, Coach and Hearse Builders. Ravenna, printed by S.D. Harris [188-?]. Oblong octavo publisher's illustrated wrapper; 50pp, full page wood engraved illustrations throughout. A remarkably good copy. Au$250

Ravenna was clearly a hearse town in the later 19th and early 20th centuries. Merts and Riddle bought their employer's coach building company in 1861 and expanded into hearses a decade or so later. When Merts left in 1891 the company became Riddle Coach & Hearse Co. This is the earliest catalogue - dated "1880 or so" - in the collection of Thomas Riddle, descendant and company historian. The catalogues at the Huntington with a conjectured date of 1875 aren't. Romaine did not see any Merts & Riddle catalogues.

Catalogue - clothing. E. Rosenburger, New York City. A Dark Secret is Let Out By [cover title; inside:] The Clothing Specialists of America. E. Rosenburger & Co. NY, the company [c1890]. Large octavo (26x18cm) publisher's illustrated wrapper; [16]pp, illustrated by wood engravings throughout. A vertical fold, a rumpled but very decent copy. Au$350

A splendid example of the value that even the most casual racism adds to any advertising. Who could resist opening this to find out what could so shock this mammy? What is it about images like this that made them so successful? It can't just be that they were funny, nor that they comforted one race nursing a fear of another. And what makes them so magnetic now. It can't just be that they shock us? And what is the dark secret? I've been right through this and I'm still not convinced there isn't some secret beyond Rosenburger's cheap suits for men and boys. I can't find this or any Rosenburger catalogue in Romaine, McKinstry or anywhere else I can think of looking.

An expansive and handsome catalogue of dress of all layers for all occasions for women, men, children and infants. As well: fancy work, drapery and haberdashery, household goods, stationery, clocks and watches, and a couple of pages of cricket equipment. A smart catalogue naturally; not so many labourer's wives bought furs. Plymouth also did furs for children and men, their motorist's racoon and muskrat coats are pretty good and as a child I would much rather have worn the mixed muskrat and dog than the itchy tweed hand-me-down I was forced into.

Wine Labels - Sample Book. Myncke Freres, Brussels. The printer's sample album of wine labels printed by Myncke Freres of Brussels. n.p. 1930s. Oblong quarto (230x315mm) flexible linen album with some 220 lithograph labels plus some neck labels and vintage dates (ranging from 1915 to 1937) mounted on both sides of 31 leaves. Nothing removed and all in great shape. Au$550

This is an album to be shown to clients rather than a scrap book. There are numbers of labels for specific wineries and appellations and numbers more that are for generic varieties or, in some case, unlettered altogether. All are signed Litho Myncke or initialled LM or MF. The Mynckes seem to have made something of a specialty of wine - a rummage round the internet finds a couple of large posters for champagne - and this album shows they had a fairly long reach across western Europe - France, Belgium, into Germany and includes some Port labels in English. The styles also range around, from the classic and restrained (it's hard to beat a modicum of gold on glazed midnight blue) to vibrantly modern to garish kitsch.

Noshi-gami is specially printed paper to be folded and attached to gifts as I understand it. That traditional forms are maintained is clear but by now - 1931 - the influence of modernism, compared to the couple of earlier examples I've seen, is obvious in the bright, flat forms with simpler, bolder shapes and sharper contrasts.

A successful little book it seems, there were several printings between 1852 and 1862 (the publishers claim 27 by 1857). Howard, surgeon dentist to the Archbishop of Canterbury, at first seems to approve of artificial teeth made of hippo tusk but later points out that they don't last long. There are similar problems with ivory, gold and natural teeth (recycled from other mouths) which understandably disturb persons of "extreme sensibility and delicacy of feeling". He has, though, invented a "new description of composition teeth" which are "perfectly incorruptible" - their "durability is unbounded". By 1863 Howard had moved from Hanover Square to Fleet Street and extended his hours from 11 till 4 to 10 till 5. Whether this means a thriving business or desperate decline I can't tell.

TRELOAR, W.P. The Prince of Palms. London, Sampson Low &c [1884]. Elegantly slender octavo publisher's dark green cloth, front cover decorated & titled in gilt (a touch flecked); 50pp, colour frontispiece, wood engraved illustrations through the text, some full page. A rather good copy of this appealing book. Inscribed and signed by Treloar. Au$250

Treloar's father had published a pamphlet with the same title "about forty years ago" (in 1852 actually) with the object of publicising his new industry of cocoa-nut fibre mats and matting. The Treloars have done pretty well with coconuts as W.P. is Sir William Treloar Bart. The view of acres of their works at Southwark illustrates well enough the extent of their success and he has in turn published this paean to the enriching nut, updating and giving an account of the industry around the world.

But as well there are goods that have no apparent relationship - hair clippers, scales, sewing machines, some very ugly clocks.

[Catalogue - Wire Fences]. Parker, Winder & Achurch Ltd, Birmingham. Three items, being a catalogue of "Empire" Woven Wire Fence; a smaller brochure for the "Empire" Fence; and a leaflet with two actual samples of wire. Birmingham [c1914]. Three volumes printed wrapps. The first is oblong quarto, 40pp, numerous illustrations; the second a gatefold sheet opening to eight pages, quarto by size, illustrated; and the last a bifold brochure titled "9 or 13" with a sample of 9 gauge wire inserted through the cover and a sample of 13 gauge wire stitched inside. Au$75

You may need to exercise some imagination to conceive the charm of these from a mere catalogue description, unless you are already a wire and fence afficionado. The first and most extensive list (dated 1914) adds to the expected illustrations of wares photo views of their fences erected and a list of patrons, a couple of which at least are in further parts of the Empire.

[Catalogue - Prints]. Hodgson & Graves, London. Catalogue of Engravings, after the finest pictures of the schools of Europe; systematically arranged .. index to the subjects .. a list of works in progress, or recently completed: forming part of the stock of Hodgson and Graves. London, Hodgson & Graves 1836. Octavo modern 'art' morocco with the original titled cloth from the front board laid down; viii,212 [of 214]pp. Top trimmed from the title, some browning and a leaf missing. Au$50

A bit sad, this somewhat flawed copy of an extensive and invaluable catalogue of the stock of the heirs to Boydell is unappealingly if solidly bound and has as said a piece cut from the top of the title page. More disturbing is the lack of p193/4 which contains W to Z of their list of books. However, the catalogues of engravings and index are complete and are certainly useful to any afficionado of engravings of the later 18th and earlier 19th centuries. Listied - wherever applicable - are dimensions, the cost of prints, proofs, special proofs and coloured copies.

A handsome catalogue of traditional reproduction silverware. The catalogue itself probably dates from around 1930, perhaps even a little earlier, but was clearly circulated for a long time as there is a letter about wages and price rises dated 1956 loosley inserted.
