>GREENWELL, G.C. A Practical Treatise on Mine Engineering. Newcastle, Lambert; London, Spon 1870. Two volumes quarto modern half morocco preserving the original cloth sides & marbled endpapers (edges a little worn); ,255pp, 64 colour litho plates (all but three double page). A few spots, occasional useful pencilling; a quite handsome set. Au$750
Second edition, much revised, rewritten and reconstructed to encompass progress since the first (1855) edition. Determinedly practical, Greenwell registers his gratification for works already laid out following his advice and reiterates that the instructions here can be 'safely followed with proper working results.' It is also a very pretty book, if a mining book may be called that. The plates, even those of strata, are appealing. Strata, fossils, machinery - all these work as graphic designs, as do particularly (believe it) some plans of coal workings.
>[Eglinton]. FARMER, John S. 'Twixt Two Worlds: a narrative of the life and work of William Eglinton. London, Psychological Press 1886. Quarto publisher's green cloth blocked in red & black (recased and rebacked with the original spine preserved, this rubbed and with a little loss at the tips); ,196pp, etched portrait by Tissot & 8 colour litho plates, illustrations through the text. Scattered spotting, mostly at the ends and a thoroughly decent copy. Au$900
Some of the colour plates, which are by the bird painter Keulemans, are as astonishing and beautiful as any exercise in lithography ever done and make one wonder whether Barnett Freedman owned a copy of this. Wentworth (84 & 76 note) wrongly attributes the plates and many of the text illustrations as well as the portrait to Tissot (as did I until my attention was drawn to chapter XVII). Eglinton was one of the most successful and polished mediums of the day, specialising in spirit writing but not adverse to the odd materialization. Tissot apparently became involved after the death of his mistress Mrs Newton and we are given an account of the seance where she appeared, kissed him and shook hands.
